AlliedSignal Site - Block & Point Streets
In 1845 Isaac Tyson Jr. founded America's first and largest bichromate
factory on this peninsula. Chromium was processed here for over 140 years.
During the 1990s, the 22-acre site has undergone a multi-million dollar
environmental cleanup in preparation for future development by the Allied
Signal Corporation, the owner since 1954. The peninsula was originally
shaped like a hook (see map) and was inhabited by "ladies of the night".
These circumstances prompted one historian to suggest that this site is
responsible for the term "hooker".
