St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church -
Broadway & Bank Street
This parish is the second oldest in the diocese, having been founded in
1792 for Irish immigrants. The current church, built in 1897, replaced an
1806 structure. In 1861, a young priest, who grew up in Old Town nearby,
served his first assignment at St. Patrick's. He later became a prelate
of the church -- the much loved James Cardinal Gibbons. During his rule
of the Archdiocese of Baltimore (1877-1921), Cardinal Gibbons helped
found Catholic University of America and worked for improved labor
relations and international peace.
