This 1752 structure is said to be the sole surviving 18th century coffee
house on the East Coast. A coffee house was a public meeting place where
(mostly) gentlemen gathered to share food, drink and talk. Before the
Declaration of Independence, local patriots met here to declare "brave
and manly opposition" to British tyranny.
